Skolexari Cradle Marks

The Cradle Mark

General

At birth, each Skolexari is born with a natural gemstone embedded in the flesh of their inner wrist. Cradle Marks do not dictate Skolexari destiny, but they are symbolic of the individual's basic personality and what their talents may be.

Jobs and roles favor Skolexari whose Cradle Mark aligns with traditional expectations. Example: high-ranking military have red Cradle Marks, religious leaders have white.

Cradle Marks function like a hardcore astrological sign. Some Skolexari deeply identify with their mark and its meaning, while others do not. Certain colors have strong reputations or social associations, some more prestigious or burdensome than others. Obscure colors, like black, are harder to interpret, tend to recur in individuals who pursue certain paths or exhibit specific mentalities.

Family, colony, and culture also is deeply interconnected with Cradle Marks and their meaning. These colors run in families and are passed down genetically (two red Cradle Mark parents produce red Cradle Mark children). There is a measurable skill difference between a warrior with a red Cradle Mark and a warrior with a blue Cradle Mark, though the reasons cannot be proved by science.

Skolexari believe people have choices, but not unlimited self-authorship. Nature, Cradle Mark, clan, ancestry, and cosmic purpose establish the shape within which a person chooses. In this, they believe the Cradle Mark decides many aspects of life and feel no rebellion or anger towards that as their talents, family, and society facilitates this narrative.

Skolexari are never required to make their cradle mark visible, they can cover it if they want. It’s a private part of their body that the individual is in control of. There is no law or requirement it’s visible.

Appearance

Cradle Marks are oval or round, no other shape.

They range in size from small to large though never exceed the width of the wrist.

Cradle Marks may have many facets or be smooth or a mix. However, they never have sharp edges. Some are sparkly catching the light intensely, others less so.

Colors: Red, Blue, Green, Purple, White, Black, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Orange.

Colors are uniform. There is never any question of the color. Cradle Marks are never two colors or mixed or obscure, again, the color should be obvious.

Purple (Amethyst)

Extremely rare Cradle Mark.

Divergent thinkers, exceptional innovators, display great talent.

Spontaneously born (parents cradle marks do not produce Purple, it only occurs randomly).

Become great leaders, world-changers (for good), stand apart from the rest, and are often brought into Royal lines and become close to important figures of the time.

Some Skolexari with purple cradle marks develop special powers, these are rare even among the purple cradle marks and called a Paragon.* See Purple Cradle Marks with Powers

Black (Obsidian/Onyx)

The Cursed Cradle Mark.

Misunderstood, outcasts.

Roles: Assassins, intelligence agents, crime lords, reclusive misfits.

Second rarest cradle mark, may be born spontaneously or follows bloodlines.

Often brilliant but consumed by personal darkness. Black Cradle Marks grant the Skolexari a very unique power: they can manipulate their bioluminescent patterns, thus masking and hiding their true emotional state (allowing them to lie, even when feeling intense emotions).

Black Cradle Marks have a terrible stigma in Skolexari society. Other Skolexari dislike and distrust those with black cradle marks, even if the individual is outstanding and has never done anything illegal or bad. The ability to mask and control their glow patterns unnerves many Skolexari. The tendency of black marks to be involved in crime or do wrong reinforces the belief that black cradle marks create evil or malicious Skolexari. In the media, they’re almost always the villains. On the other hand, Black Cradle marks are required for many roles and jobs which wouldn’t exist without the ability to mask and control bioluminescent markings.

Unfortunately there is some truth to the stigma of Black Cradle marks being involved in crime, this is reality. Kadiku are a famous terrorist (Skolexari mafia) family who all have Black Cradle marks. Other notorious criminals and problem makers throughout history have often had Black Cradle marks. This may be less due to Black Cradle marks being “bad” and more the fact that only Black Cradle marks could get away with it.

Yellow (Amber, Topaz)

Artists, creatives, visionaries. Expressive, emotional, eccentric, creators.

‧⋆ ✧˚₊‧⋆. ✧˚₊‧⋆‧ ‧⋆ ✧˚₊‧⋆. ✧˚₊‧⋆

Gold or Silver (Metallic)

The Royal Mark.

This gemstone bears no tell of the Royal's personality or skills; it only denotes blood.

The cradle mark color is very old, descending from ancient clans who ruled before unification. It is better preserved in some clans than in others.

Gold and silver marks occur only in descendants of the ancient royal bloodlines, but not every person holding a royal title possesses one. Royals brought into the aristocracy through marriage, adoption, elevation, or newer colonial lines may retain another mark color.

‧⋆ ✧˚₊‧⋆. ✧˚₊‧⋆‧ ‧⋆ ✧˚₊‧⋆. ✧˚₊‧⋆

Orange (Fire Opal)

Red-adjacent, the warrior of the mind. Battlefield tacticians, pragmatic over idealistic, high stakes negotiators, war analysts and planners, coordinators, high-level advisors. Adaptive, fast-thinking, situationally brilliant.

Quirks of Orange Cradle Marks ~ Are more likely to burn out entirely, becoming disillusioned or defectors. Some Skolexari believe orange cradle marks "burn bright, burn out" if they're not supported by strong family bonds.

Tampering

Tampering with Cradle Marks is considered heresy.

Rare, but can be done.

Typically done to fake purple or metallic gemstone for prestige and access to restricted roles. If discovered, all individuals involved are publicly and violently executed, no exceptions. It is possible to cut a cradle stone from one Skolexari and put it into the wrist of another. In the case of Purple or Black gemstones, the special skill or purpose granted by those stones does not transfer, suggesting it runs deeper than the physical stone but the appearance of having it would grant social power and status.

Purple Cradle Marks with Powers

Some Skolexari with Purple Cradle marks develop powers beyond the normal ability or expectation of the Skolexari species; these Skolexari are extremely rare. One such person may be born every thousand years, it’s that kind of rare. These are called Paragons.

Most Purple cradle marks do not manifest special powers.

Paragons are seen as divine. Skolexari believe Paragons are part of the Unity Spiral, a living symbol of their view of an interconnected universe.

Creator Notes: Purple Cradle Marks are really special to Skolexari and because their most beloved and impressive historical figures and society shapers had this color, the birth of such an individual is revered. Attempts are made to give the child every advantage to develop the special talents which may improve Skolexari society. Not every purple becomes some world changer or achieves great things, which is very disappointing for those around them. When a true Paragon is born, it’s often obvious right away (the child displays extraordinary traits). The special powers should never be Superman or DBZ level abilities, something like a Jedi from the original Star Wars movies would be acceptable.

Slaves: Bokosh and Glarbash

Slaves General Skolexari have a lot of different slave species but I invent them as I need them, and so I won’t create aliens just to fill the space. Slavery involves a small percentage of the Empire’s total population, but it is an established and highly visible industry.  Skolexari don't like aliens, many of them find owning a slave weird, distasteful. They have 2 distinctions for aliens (slaves). Aliens (glarbash or bokosh) live in constant danger if unregistered (without Master). No recognition of personhood. Registered slave becomes property, protected by Skolexari property laws. Skolexari primarily use aliens as a food source, which they call exotic meat. Unwanted glarbash or bokosh are sold at Skolexari slave markets. A Skolexari may watch the auctions for an alien that looks like they would make a good slave, buy them, and hope for the best. If something doesn't work out, the slave can easily be re-sold at the market to someone else. Most Bokosh don’t make good pets or ...
