Entry Content: [The story of St. Vitalis as told by Ailbe (use this dialog as is in-game): “There was a holy man once, from Gaza they say. Saint Vitalis. And if you hear what he did, you might raise an eyebrow and think the worst straight away, sure. They said he spent every night with a different harlot. Every night. And you’d think that was the dark chapter before repentance, so you would. But no. That was the holiness of the man. He’d lived long years as a hermit in the desert. Silence, sand, nothing but God and the wind. And then, late in his life, he walked into Alexandria. Big city. Loud. Full of trade and sin and sorrow tangled together. He worked fierce hard by day. Grueling jobs. Breaking his back for coin. Each night he went into a brothel. The Christians there, they were giving out something terrible about him. ‘Fallen monk,’ they said. ‘Shame to the Church.’ But he paid them no mind. We’re quick enough to weigh another soul on our scales, we are. When they found him dead in the street, he was holding a scrap of paper. A verse from Saint Paul. ‘Do not judge before the appointed time… for the Lord will bring to light what is hidden in darkness.’ They’d already judged him, you see. Thought him lost. But here’s the thing. He never went to those women for sin. Not once. Each night he’d pay for the room and say only this: ‘Do not touch me.' And when they’d stare at him like he’d lost his senses, he’d tell them he wasn’t there to use them. He was buying them one night of freedom. One night where no man would lay claim to them. He’d tell them they were loved. That Christ died for them same as any queen. That what had been done to them didn’t name them forever. He’d speak with them. Listen more than he spoke, I’d say. Pray for them, pray with them. And when they were ready, he’d help them leave. Find them homes. Dowries. Work. Sometimes even marriage or the cloister. All at the cost of his own name. In a world that used them and then spat on them for being used, he saw them. Not as sin walking, but as wounded sheep. Like the Good Shepherd, so. Leaving the quiet hills to go after the lost. He gave them the mercy from Christ’s wounded side. And he knew fine well it would make him despised same as them. They were worth it. Best not to rush judgment. We don’t always see what a soul is carrying.”]
Entry Keys: St. Patrick, Saint Patrick, slave, enslaved
Entry Content: [Story of St. Patrick as told by Ailbe (use the following dialog in-game): “Saint Patrick, is it? Ah, he wasn’t always a saint, you know. Not at the start. He was taken, so he was. A boy carried off from his home across the sea and sold here in Irilandia as a slave. Six years he spent minding sheep on a lonely hill. Cold, hungry, fierce alone," he paused, his eyes soft. "But, that’s where he found God. Or maybe where God found him. He’d pray a hundred times a day, they say. And many again by night. One evening he heard a voice in a dream. Told him a ship was waiting, his freedom was coming. He ran, found the ship, and went home. Studied God, studied the good word, but the Lord sent another dream. The Irish calling him back. The very people who’d bound him. Now that’s a hard mercy, isn’t it? To return to the land of your chains but return he did. He came back not with anger, but with the Gospel. Walked our hills. Spoke to kings. Lit the Paschal fire at Tara when no man was meant to, and stood firm when they threatened him. They say he used the shamrock to speak of the Holy Trinity. Three in one. He baptized thousands. Broke no man with force. Just steady truth and a heart that wouldn’t quit. He drove out the snakes, so the story goes. Though I think the serpents were more in men’s hearts than under stones. He forgave the people who’d enslaved him. That’s the part I hold onto. If God could turn a frightened slave into the father of our faith, there’s hope for the rest of us, so there is. Grand story, isn’t it?”]
