Skolexari - Overview

General Overview

The Skolexari universe is set in the year 8589, within a vast, ancient interstellar empire shaped by clan loyalty, religious conviction, technological power, and generations of warfare. At its center are the Skolexari themselves: a formidable humanoid species whose society can be nurturing and secure within its borders, yet violently imperial beyond them. Their civilization offers its citizens stability, education, medicine, and a powerful sense of belonging, while its expansion has brought conquest, forced assimilation, slavery, and extinction to civilizations it considers lesser.

Skolexari are tall, green-skinned humanoids with sharply pointed ears, dense metal-rich bones, neon-blue blood, and an average lifespan of roughly two centuries. Most stand between seven and a half and eight and a half feet tall, although individuals may range from six to ten feet. They are physically stronger and more durable than humans, heal comparatively quickly, and possess an unusual resistance to electricity. Their appearance varies widely: hair and eyes may be nearly any color, heterochromia is common, and their teeth are generally gray or off-white. Despite their imposing biology, they are not monstrous in form. They have no fangs, claws, horns, tails, wings, or animal-like legs.

Two traits immediately distinguish every Skolexari. The first is the Cradle Mark, a natural gemstone embedded in the inner wrist from birth. Its color is traditionally associated with temperament and potential: red with warriors, blue with scholars, green with healers and living sciences, yellow with artists, white with spiritual or empathetic roles, and orange with strategic thinkers. Rare purple marks are associated with exceptional innovators and historical world-changers, while black marks carry a severe stigma because their bearers can conceal their emotional glow. Cradle Marks influence expectations, education, prestige, and career paths, but they do not determine an individual’s destiny.

The second defining trait is a network of involuntary bioluminescent skin patterns. These unique markings appear most visibly across the face, throat, torso, and hands, glowing in shared colors and motions that communicate emotion. Love, grief, fear, anger, joy, desire, and other intense states may become literally visible upon the skin. Because most Skolexari cannot suppress this display, their culture prizes directness and has little patience for elaborate emotional denial. Glow is not considered proof of guilt or innocence, but it gives Skolexari an unusual awareness of one another and makes ordinary social deception considerably more difficult.

Skolexari life is organized around the clan. A clan may contain hundreds or thousands of people spread across several colonies, with individual families acting as its roots. Elders lead families, councils represent clans, and the High Council of Elders advises and works alongside the imperial aristocracy. Reputation is collective: one person’s honor or disgrace may follow their relatives and descendants. Loyalty to family, obedience to elders, self-control, protection of children, and contribution to the whole are treated as moral foundations. Their justice system therefore relies less upon courts and lawyers than upon family discipline, clan judgment, social pressure, blood debts, and intervention by Royal Overseers when a clan fails to act.

Children are considered sacred and belong, in a cultural sense, not only to their parents but to the wider clan. Skolexari young require intense physical and emotional bonding, extended nursing or specialized formula, and close mentorship during their early years. Relatives, neighbors, and even strangers are expected to intervene when a child is endangered. This communal protection produces a society with strong family networks and few abandoned children, but it also reinforces conformity: a child is raised to understand that the self is part of a larger ours, never an isolated island.

The Empire is ruled through a two-tier royal structure. At its symbolic heart are the Hidden Ones, a tiny, secretive core bloodline secluded on the homeworld and treated with near-divine authority. The practical work of governing is performed by a vast network of royal houses. These nobles administer colonies and solar systems, conduct diplomacy, lead military institutions, and enforce imperial will. Power is decentralized enough to accommodate ancient clans and regional customs, but all authority ultimately serves the continuity and strength of the Skolexari Empire.

For recognized citizens, everyday life can be remarkably secure. The Empire provides healthcare, transportation, free education, retirement support, a modest apartment upon adulthood, and a guaranteed Standard of Life, or SOL, sufficient for basic food, clothing, shelter, and medical needs. Employment provides luxuries and status rather than simple survival. Skolexari society expects capable people to contribute, however, and those perceived as idle or unwilling to develop their talents may face deep social contempt.

Skolexari technology is highly advanced but culturally selective. They employ artificial intelligence, replicators, regenerative medicine, cloaking vessels, sophisticated armor, gem-based weapons, and limited nanotechnology. At the same time, they regard autonomous robots, synthetic people, elective cybernetic enhancement, and the replacement of organic life with machinery as spiritually corrupting. A restorative prosthetic may be accepted; transforming oneself beyond natural limits may lead to social exile. This uneasy boundary between technology and the soul is one of the civilization’s defining contradictions.

The dominant Lunaxi’z tradition teaches that the universe is interconnected, repeating, and reflective. Spirals, geometric patterns, the number three, and recurring symbols are considered signs of a greater cosmic unity. God is less a separate person than an immense consciousness expressed through life itself. This belief influences architecture, art, meditation, attitudes toward reincarnation, and the conviction that all pointed-eared humanoids share a sacred origin. Such species are known as Star-Seeds.

That religious kinship shapes Skolexari interstellar politics. Star-Seeds are regarded as distant cousins who should be protected, incorporated, and granted a place within the SB-5 Pact, the immense political and military structure surrounding the Empire. Some Pact members joined willingly, others were pressured, annexed, occupied, or conquered “for their own good.” Star-Seeds living within the Empire may receive the same legal protections and SOL as Skolexari citizens, although prejudice and regional inequality remain.

Species that do not qualify as Star-Seeds face a far darker reality. Unless they are powerful enough to force diplomacy or protected through an existing alliance, non-Star-Seed civilizations may be conquered, displaced, enslaved, harvested for resources, or eradicated. The Skolexari view their domination as the imposition of order upon lesser life, revealing the sharp boundary around their compassion: loyalty and protection are profound, but they are not universal.

Modern Skolexari identity was forged by two great historical crucibles. The first was the bloody unification of their homeworld, which redirected ancient clan rivalries into a single planetary identity. The second was R’visiia, the Great Cut, a 762-year defensive war against the invading Kaharime. The war devastated colonies and cities, killed generations of Skolexari, and permanently shaped their fear of outside domination. After surviving, they turned their collective aggression outward, building an empire intended to ensure they would never again be vulnerable.

The Skolexari military is therefore more than a defensive institution. It is a pillar of culture, status, economy, and identity. Its forces are massive, disciplined, and technologically advanced, employing specialized strategies for each enemy rather than relying upon a single doctrine. Skolexari are notorious for calculated brutality and overwhelming retaliation, yet they are also blunt, dependable allies who keep their promises and answer calls for aid with clan-like devotion. Once a bond is recognized, they defend it with the same ferocity they use to destroy an enemy.

The heart of the setting lies in this tension. The Skolexari are capable of tenderness, beauty, faith, humor, artistic expression, loyal friendship, and extraordinary care for their own. They are also proud imperialists whose definition of personhood stops at a carefully guarded border. Their universe is neither a shining utopia nor an empire populated only by monsters. It is a civilization of luminous emotions and enormous shadows, forever trying to turn the wider galaxy into a reflection of itself.

Slaves: Bokosh and Glarbash

Slaves General Skolexari have a lot of different slave species but I invent them as I need them, and so I won’t create aliens just to fill the space. Slavery involves a small percentage of the Empire’s total population, but it is an established and highly visible industry.  Skolexari don't like aliens, many of them find owning a slave weird, distasteful. They have 2 distinctions for aliens (slaves). Aliens (glarbash or bokosh) live in constant danger if unregistered (without Master). No recognition of personhood. Registered slave becomes property, protected by Skolexari property laws. Skolexari primarily use aliens as a food source, which they call exotic meat. Unwanted glarbash or bokosh are sold at Skolexari slave markets. A Skolexari may watch the auctions for an alien that looks like they would make a good slave, buy them, and hope for the best. If something doesn't work out, the slave can easily be re-sold at the market to someone else. Most Bokosh don’t make good pets or ...
